Sugaring
How long does my hair need to be for a Brazilian sugaring appointment?
1/4 inch is the rule of thumb, and it's a meaningful one. Sugar paste needs enough length to wrap around each follicle and pull from the root. Below that, the paste is essentially exfoliating skin without grabbing hair, which is uncomfortable and wastes the appointment.
For someone who shaves regularly, that's usually 7-10 days of regrowth. Some people grow hair faster (5-7 days), some slower (10-14). If you're unsure, a quick visual check the morning of: if the hair is at least the length of a grain of rice, you're fine.
Coming in too short is the more common mistake. Shaving the night before is the worst version — you'll need to reschedule. Shaving 4-5 days before is usually borderline; the paste may grip some areas and not others, producing a patchy result that needs touching up at home.
Coming in too long is rarely a problem. If your hair is over 1/2 inch, your sugarist will trim it before starting. This adds a few minutes but doesn't affect the result.
For a first-time appointment specifically, plan to grow it out for 2-3 weeks. The hair pattern after shaving is uneven — some follicles are still active, others are mid-cycle — and a longer growth-out period gives all of them time to surface. After your first sugaring, regrowth is more uniform and you can come back at the 1/4-inch mark.
Key facts
- Minimum hair length: 1/4 inch (roughly the length of a grain of rice).
- After shaving, that's typically 7-10 days of regrowth.
- Sugaring grips hair as short as 1/8 inch, but the result is patchier.
- For a first-time appointment, plan 2-3 weeks of post-shave growth so the hair pattern is uniform.
- Hair longer than 1/2 inch will be trimmed at the start of the appointment.
- Coming in too short is the most common reason an appointment underperforms.
Common follow-up questions
I shaved 3 days ago — is it long enough?
Probably not for a Brazilian — sugar paste needs more grip on the sensitive bikini area than on, say, legs. For arms or legs, 5-7 days might work. For a Brazilian, wait the full 7-10. If you're close, your sugarist can do a partial assessment when you arrive and reschedule if needed.
What if I've been letting it grow for months?
No problem. Long hair gets trimmed to a workable length at the start of the appointment, adding a few minutes. The end result is the same.
Should I trim it myself before coming in?
Not necessary, and not recommended. Self-trimming usually leaves uneven length, which makes the sugaring process slower because the paste grips inconsistently. Let your sugarist trim if needed.
Can I exfoliate the night before?
Yes — gentle exfoliation 24-48 hours before helps lift dead skin off the hair shafts so the paste grips the hair, not the skin. Skip exfoliation the morning of (skin should be calm, not freshly scrubbed).
When this doesn’t apply
Length requirements are slightly different for laser-treated areas (where regrowth is patchy and intermittent) and for people in the early stages of hormone replacement therapy. If your hair growth pattern is unusual, mention it when booking so your sugarist can plan the appointment.
