Sugaring
What should I do before my first Brazilian sugaring appointment?
The single most important thing is hair length. Sugar paste needs at least 1/4 inch of hair to grip — about 7-10 days of growth from a clean shave for most people. For a first appointment specifically, 2-3 weeks of growth is better, because shaving leaves hair in mixed growth stages and a longer growout lets all the follicles surface.
The morning of, skip coffee and energy drinks. Caffeine constricts blood vessels and amplifies pain perception. One cup is fine if you can't face the morning without it; just don't double up.
About 30 minutes before your appointment, take 400mg of ibuprofen if it's safe for you (not if you're on blood thinners or have a stomach issue with NSAIDs). It reduces inflammation and dampens the sharper edge of the sensation.
Exfoliate gently 24-48 hours before — a glove or a chemical exfoliant like Tend Skin or Fur Ingrown Concentrate. This lifts dead skin off the hair shafts so the paste grips hair, not skin. Skip the morning-of exfoliation; you want skin calm and intact, not freshly scrubbed.
Wear loose, breathable clothing. Skinny jeans, leggings, or anything that creates friction post-appointment can irritate freshly-sugared skin. Cotton underwear is your best friend for the rest of the day.
Hygienically, shower beforehand if you can, and use a non-perfumed soap on the bikini area. Don't use scented lotion or oil — those can interfere with the paste. Your sugarist will clean the area at the start of the appointment regardless.
Mentally: it's OK to be nervous. First-timers always are. Your sugarist will explain what's happening before each step, and you can stop the appointment at any time.

Common follow-up questions
Should I shave before my first appointment if I'm too long?
No. Coming in too long is rarely a problem — your sugarist will trim. Coming in too short is the bigger mistake. If you're unsure, leave it alone and let the sugarist handle it.
What should I wear to the appointment?
Whatever you came in. The studio provides whatever covering you'll need during the appointment. After, loose pants or a flowy skirt is more comfortable than tight jeans.
Should I tell my sugarist anything specific about my skin?
Yes — mention any retinoid use in the last week, recent sunburn, active eczema or psoriasis, anti-acne medications, or recent chemical peels. These don't necessarily disqualify you but change how the appointment is conducted.
What if I get my period the day of?
Wear a tampon and come in. It's normal, sugarists handle it constantly, and there's no reason to reschedule.
When this doesn’t apply
If you're on Accutane, retinoids, or have a recent (under 5 days) sunburn, sugaring isn't safe — reschedule for after your skin is fully recovered. People with diabetes or compromised skin healing should let their sugarist know in advance so the appointment can be adjusted.
