Sugaring
What should I do after a Brazilian sugaring appointment?
Right after the appointment, your follicles are open. They'll close within about 24 hours, but during that window bacteria can enter, and the inside of a hot tub or a sweaty workout creates exactly the conditions for that. Skip those things for a day and you'll avoid 95% of post-sugaring irritation.
Avoid scented products on the area for 24-48 hours. That includes perfumed body wash, fragrant lotion, and any kind of vaginal wipe or spray. Plain water and a fragrance-free moisturizer (like CeraVe or Vanicream) are perfect.
Cotton underwear is genuinely important for the first day. Synthetics trap heat and sweat, and the slight irritation that's already there from sugaring gets amplified. Skip the thongs, leggings, and skinny jeans for at least 24 hours.
Starting day 3, exfoliation is your best friend. Sugaring removes hair from the root, but new hairs need to push through skin again, and dead skin cell buildup is what causes most ingrowns. Use a soft glove, a Korean exfoliating cloth, or a gentle chemical exfoliant (lactic or glycolic acid). Two to three times a week is plenty.
For ingrown prevention specifically, products like Tend Skin (salicylic acid + glycolic acid) or Fur Ingrown Concentrate are widely used. Apply 2-3 times a week starting day 3. After a few months of consistency, ingrowns become rare.
Between appointments, you can shower normally, use any product you like, and resume all normal activities. The 24-hour rule is a hard window; everything after that is just regular skin care.

Common follow-up questions
I have small red bumps the day after — is that normal?
Yes. Small pinpoint bumps where hairs were are histamine reactions and clear on their own within 24-48 hours. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer and avoid friction. If they're still present after 3 days or seem to be growing, that's an ingrown or folliculitis — see your provider or a dermatologist.
Can I shave between sugaring appointments?
You can, but it disrupts the hair-cycle alignment that makes consistent sugaring last longer over time. If you do, give yourself the full 7-10 days of regrowth before your next appointment so the paste has length to grip.
What if I get an ingrown hair?
Apply warm compresses 2-3 times a day to bring the hair toward the surface. Don't dig at it. If it doesn't surface within a few days, your sugarist or dermatologist can extract it cleanly. Daily exfoliation and ingrown serum reduces future occurrences dramatically.
How soon after sugaring can I tan?
Wait 24-48 hours before sun exposure or tanning beds. Open follicles + UV is a recipe for hyperpigmentation, especially for darker skin tones. Apply SPF if you'll be outside.
When this doesn’t apply
If you develop a fever, spreading redness, severe swelling, or pus from the area, that's not normal post-sugaring irritation — it's a sign of folliculitis or infection and needs medical attention. Rare, but worth knowing.
